Learn about diaper rash and causes

At Bepanthen, we understand that there’s nothing more precious than your little ones, that’s why we’ve spent more than 75 years caring for their beautifully delicate skin. Bepanthen products have been specially developed for baby’s needs and contain no preservatives, colorants, and fragrances.

Babys’ skin sensitivity

Babies’ skin is thinner and softer than ours, and much more sensitive. It also has a higher pH level, which makes it more sensitive to irritants. Although unpleasant for you and your baby, diaper rash is extremely common and easy to manage with the right care.

If your baby has diaper rash, please don’t feel like you’ve done anything wrong – it happens to all of us. Parents must receive appropriate education from health care professionals and nurses to ensure that the importance of diaper hygiene and good skin practices is understood.

What is diaper rash?

Diaper rash can occur at any time during your child’s diaper-wearing stage. Most children will experience diaper rash during this time, which appears as redness, lesions, swelling or spots on your baby’s bottom, thighs and genitals. The affected skin with diaper rash may also be hot to the touch.

Most common ages for diaper rash

The risk of diaper rash changes as your baby grows. During the first twelve months diaper rash is especially common and highest prevalence is seen in 9-12 months, as stools are more frequent, and your baby’s skin is thinner, more permeable, and has a higher pH level. That’s why we’ve formulated different products depending on the age of your baby.

We’ve developed Bepanthen Diaper Rash Ointment. With provitamin B5, it gently aids natural skin recovery, while keeping it soft smooth and moisturised. Learn how to apply Bepanthen to diaper rash.

How does diaper rash affect your baby?

Your baby’s behavior might seem more troubled – the skin may look sore and feel hot to touch, and there may be spots, pimples or blisters.

What causes diaper rash?

The most common cause of diaper rash is a combination of soiled diapers and friction. A baby’s delicate skin becomes sore and fragile when in contact with the natural yet irritating chemicals in healthy urine, and the irritants and enzymes in faeces.

Diaper rash is more likely to occur if:

  • Being in contact with pee or poo (stools) for a long time
  • The diaper rubbing against your baby’s skin
  • Not cleaning the diaper area or changing the diaper often enough
  • Penetration of irritants
  • Alcohol based baby wipes
  • Your baby recently taking antibiotics
  • Suffering from diarrhoea
  • Nutritional deficiency (biotin or zinc)

When should you see the doctor?

Remember diaper rash is incredibly common, and most cases will clear up quickly with the right care and a little help from Bepanthen® Nappy Care Ointment.

If it’s been a few days and the rash is spreading outside the diaper area, if the skin is broken and weeping, or your baby is feverish, there may be an infection.

Again these symptoms are common and not necessarily a cause for alarm, if the diaper dermatitis does not respond to ointment or any strategies or becomes worse after a few days you should consult a doctor or seek advice from a health care provider.
